Episode 290 - Graminy

Founded in 2010, Graminy seeks to fuse the classical and grassroots tradi- tions, from Bach to bluegrass, from Co- pland to Celtic, from Gershwin to native American, from Kodaly to klezmer, and more. Drawing on all these styles, Graminy composes and arranges all its music and calls it Class-Grass.

Graminy’s music focuses on themes of ecology and place. The name derives from the botanical name for the grass family, Gramineae, as their music draws on the entire family of grassroots tradi- tions, from all places and ecologies.

Their  new CD, “Germinations: A Blue- grass Symphony in D” has been nominated for awards in several categories at this year’s MAMA Awards (Madison Area Music Awards).

While being one of our community's top jazz saxophonists and flutists, like so many great jazz artists through the decades, Hanah Jon Taylor seems to have garnered greater accolades in Europe and other foreign locales than in his own backyard. Over the years Taylor has brought his highly-intuitive and envelope-pushing style of playing to enthusiastic audiences in all corners of the globe. Just returning from concerts in Poland and Paris, he will bring to Madison a top-flight group of Chicago musicians including pianist Jim Baker, Alex Wing on bass, guitar and oud, and percussionist Dushun Mosley for our "Jazz on a Sunday" spring series finale.

Episode 276 - Freedy Johnston

After Rolling Stone and Spin hailed his 1992 release, “Can You Fly” a masterpiece, its success led to a major label deal with Elektra (produced by Butch Vig), for whom Johnston released “This Perfect World in 1994, which included his breakthrough hit, “Bad Reputation”.  Other critically acclaimed albums followed and critics have continue to praise Johnston effusively, solidifying his reputation as one of the finest and most singular voices in the singer-songwriter genre.  Splitting his time between NYC and Madison, you may have caught Freedy in past years in rare Madison shows with Garbage alums, Butch Vig and Doug Erikson and Madison main-stays James “Pie Cown, Bill “Stick” Bielefeld and Jay Moran in their clandestine cover-band, The Know-It-All-Boyfriends.
